Srinagar : Pakistan on Thursday violated ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Samba and Hiranagar sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. The firing from the Pakistan side started late at night on May 16. The Border Security Forces (BSF) are strongly retaliating to the firing.

This comes a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled Centre ordered to suspend the operations against terrorist in the state during the holy month of Ramzan.

The Home Ministry on Wednesday said that the decision has been taken to help the “peace-loving Muslims observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment”.

However, it clarified that the security forces “reserve the right to retaliate if attacked or if essential to protect the lives of innocent people”.

Separatists in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday dubbed the ceasefire announced by the Indian government “a cruel joke on the people of the (Kashmir) Valley”.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), a conglomerate headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, met at Geelani’s residence to deliberate on the various dimensions of what they called “Operation Halt” announced by the Home Ministry. A statement issued by the group said: “Operation Halt is a cruel joke with the freedom-loving people of Kashmir engaged in a legitimate movement for right to self-determination.”

Security agencies are keeping their fingers crossed as a similar exercise nearly two decades ago witnessed the killings of 129 people including 43 security personnel, according to officials.

The security agency officials felt a need to monitor the situation closely as terror groups had used such a window as an opportunity to regroup themselves and carry out more attacks on security establishments.

During his Independence Day address last year, Modi had said bullets or abuses would not resolve the Kashmir issue.
