Mumbai: Padmaavat is a re-imagining of Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem Padmavat, written in the 16th century. But, it is Ranveer Singh, as Alaudin Khilji, who steals the show with an unbelievable performance. He could actually give people nightmares with his evil character.
After the film’s release, Ranveer Singh interacted with the media, and admitted that he had taken a lot of risk while playing the role of Khilji. “I was apprehensive about taking up the role as it was a big risk. Sanjay Sir [Bhansali, director] laid out the cards right at the start and told me that my character is bisexual, so I could make an informed choice. I think the bisexuality added another layer to Khilji’s complex personality; it was a complete dismantling of a traditional moral compass. But, this is a profession where taking big risks defines people,” he told Mid-Day.
It is also reported that Ranveer suggested the Jim Sarbh named to Bhansali’s for the role of Malik Kafur. When quizzed about Jim’s performance and his chemistry with Jim in the film. Ranveer said to BollywoodLife, “People are talking so much about mine and Jim’s parts (laughs). It is so heartening to see that. Jim was one of the most enriching co-actor experiences I ever had. You must know this, casting Jim was my idea. I had seen Neerja and was blown away by his performance. I told Sanjay Sir to please try him out for the role of Kafur. Just after his first audition he got cast. I am too thrilled about the appreciation he is getting. We know well how much he has contributed towards the film.”
On the other hand, Shahid Kapoor felt like an outsider on the set of Padmaavat. He told the media, “I’m used to being the favourite of all my filmmakers. This was the first time that I was like an outsider. When you work with a team that has worked together, you are kind of an outsider and it takes time for you to break through that barrier.”
Meanwhile, some reports also claimed that Alaudin Khilji and Maharawal Ratan Singh’s role was earlier offered to Shah Rukh Khan, but he refused as the film revolved around the character of Rani Padmavati and Khilji.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmaavat hit theatres on January 25 and is getting its share of praise.
