Srinagar: A jawan of paramilitary force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) was killed and eight others, including a policeman, were injured on Friday night when militants attacked a security convoy in Zakura area on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Militants fired at the vehicles of SSB, which were ferrying the personnel to their camp after performing law and order duties in the city, a security force official said.
One jawan of the SSB was killed and eight others were injured in the attack, the official said. The injured have been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched search operations to track down the militants. This is the first militant attack in the city since the encounter at Nowhatta on August 15 in which a CRPF commandant was killed and nine other personnel were injured.
The attack took place outside the highly sensitive Zakura industrial area that houses many offices and factories of small and medium businesses in Kashmir. The business hub is located 12 km north of the city centre of Lal Chowk.
The SSB is camped in the industrial estate in Zakura. Additional security forces have been rushed to the
spot. “Firing has stopped in the area and it has been cordoned off,” a police officer said. Militancy-related violence and terror attacks on security forces have surged in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) after the July 8 killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.
Wani’s death has sparked an unprecedented wave of protests in the Kashmir Valley, leaving over 90 people dead and thousands injur- ed in clashes between protesters and security forces. Earlier this week, two militants were killed after a three-day-long gun fight with security forces in Pampore area on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
