On this day, August 29, in the year 2017, heavy rains in Mumbai caused a lot of problems to the people. At least 14 people were reported to be killed as Mumbai recorded 468 mm of rainfall in twelve hours on August 29, 2018. Waterlogging and flooding affected transportation in many parts of the city.
Trains and roadways were blocked due to flooding and people were trapped on their ways. Almost all flights were delayed along with many getting cancelled. Power supply was shut down in many parts of the city due to fears of electrocution. The schools and colleges were declared shut on the following day by state government.
The extreme rains were estimated by Indian Meteoroidal Department five to six days in advance but the civic authorities failed to respond quickly. Researches claimed that heavy rains occurred in Mumbai due to sudden climate change which led to fluctuations in monsoon winds carrying moisture from the Arabian Sea, resulting in heavy rainfall over Mumbai and central parts of the country.
