The Apex Court today upheld the Delhi High Court’s verdict of death sentence to the four convicts in the Nirbhaya Gang-rape case. While reading out the judgement, Justice Dipak Mishra said that modern and progressive methods have been adopted in conducting the investigation. SC said, “Taking the serious injuries, the severe nature of offence committed by the convicts, we are upholding the sentence.” The judgement has received strong reactions from all corners with several prominent figures expressing their views on apex court’s decision.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal also welcomed the decision by the apex court. “DCW welcomes SC decision. Finally, justice was delayed but not denied. Nirbhaya’s rapist will be served death penalty now”.

On the night of December 16 in 2012, 23-year-old Nirbhaya was beaten, gang raped and tortured in a private bus in which she was travelling with her friend. The incident had happened in Munirka, South Delhi. She was later tossed on the road with an intention of running the bus over her but was pulled aside by her male friend. She suffered grave injuries to her abdomen, intestines and genitals and there were numerous bite marks all over her body. She succumbed to her injuries on December 29, 2012.
