New year in Pune to begin on a safe note, Wearing helmet will be mandatory

Pune: Despite the compulsory helmet rule, Punekars have been seen to be flouting it brazenly on a daily basis. Now, the Pune police will be welcoming Punekars with a new year bonaza of wearing helmets compulsorily. And it is advisable, Punekars travelling in the city on January 1, need to wear it before being given an e-challan. The police commissioner K Venkatesham announced wearing helmet by two-wheeler riders will be strictly followed.

Speaking to media persons, Venkatesham said, the police cannot continue with a situation where people are losing their lives on a daily basis for not wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers. “The rules are already in existence and has been endorsed by the Supreme Court. We are giving a lead time so citizens will go and buy helmets and will be prepared to follow the rules.”

According Venkatesham, 211 people have died in road accidents this year. In 2017, police registered 195 deaths in road accidents. The police chief said, “There is a false assumption, if a violator is fined once and issued a challan, he can show it at all junctions for the following 24 hours, while he flouts the rules for the entire day. We will not let this happen.
