Mumbai: A mistake in the birth date of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in the ‘Marathi Bhasha Parichay’ book has got the trust that published the book in trouble.

Instead of April 14, 1891, the trust has published April 4, 1891 as the birth date of Dr Ambedkar. “This book is meant for Class VI students and 50,000 copies of the book have already been distributed,” said Vilas Rupwate, Secretary, Mumbai Congress. He has demanded an inquiry on the office-bearers of the trust, which he says comes under the BMC.

He has registered a complaint against the Brihanmumbai Nimnastar Marathi Shikshak Sangathana, its publishers at the Pant Nagar police station in Ghatkopar. He has also written to the state education minister asking for the books to be called back or his party with go on an agitation.

A parent had informed Vilas of the mistake after his son who studies in Class VI noticed the error. Vilas, however, says that it is deliberate and not a technical error. “The mandal is spreading misinformation about Dr Ambedkar among young children and has tried to insult him,” he said. “The office-bearers of the trust are all Brahmins and there is a caste angle to this,” he added.

He also pointed out that the book does not mention ‘Subedar’ before the name of Dr Ambedkar’s father.
