Mumbai University Vice Chancellor unapproachable, says ABVP

Mumbai: The Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has accused the Mumbai University’s Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh is unapproachable for students.

“He has time only for programmes and foreign trips and no time for students,” said Rohit Chandode, Mumbai Pradesh secretary of ABVP. The students’ wing affiliated to the RSS has threatened to protest if action is not taken on issues raised by them.

The organisation had demanded students be shifted out of hostels on the varsity’s Kalina campus which they claim are in a precarious condition. “The ceiling of a boys’ hostel came crashing down recently,” he said.

ABVP had also demanded that the library timings be extended. A press release from the organisation said that the library closes at 5 pm whereas for many students classes finish at the same time. “We want that the library be open 24 hours,” Chandode said.

The organisation had raised some of these issues with the VC during a protest is August, but he is yet to give them a hearing though he had promised one. VC Sanjay Deshmukh was unavailable for comment.
