Mumbai: Unified fight against BJP in MBMC elections

Bhayandar: As the elections to the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) draw closer, the clamour for a united opposition to take on the BJP has started taking shape in the political arena. While the Shiv Sena has already posed a tough challenge to the BJP, three other parties, including the NCP, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) and the Mira Bhayandar Sangharsh Morcha, have decided to wrestle the polls as alliance partners, sources said.

However, there is a bigger challenge to the much-hyped united plan chalked out by the three parties to counter the winning streak of the BJP in the MBMC elections scheduled on August 20. While the NCP was left decimated following the exit of its local strongman Gilbert Mendonca who dumped the party to join the Shiv Sena, the BVA is a powerful Vasai-based political outfit led by legislator Hitendra Thakur. But, unlike its clout in the Vasai-Virar region, it has a limited presence in the twin-city.
