Mumbai: A special women’s court on Wednesday convicted an executive producer of a popular TV serial for raping a junior artist in a make-up room, after giving her a ‘lift’. The special court sentenced the producer to seven years rigorous imprisonment and asked him to cough up a fine of Rs 5,000.
Special Judge SKS Razvi convicted executive producer Mukesh Mishra, who was reportedly associated with TV serial ‘Ek Veer Ki Ardas…Veera.’ The court, while holding Mukesh guilty, considered the testimony of a sweeper, who had seen him entering the make-up room, where he raped the victim. The court also relied upon the register, in which Mishra and the victim, had signed before entering the studio.
Interestingly, the victim filed the FIR in this case after a delay of nearly one year, as she had not gathered ‘courage’ to report the incident. The ‘delay,’ according to the victim, was caused because of continuous threats given by Mishra to kill her daughter. According to the prosecution, the heinous incident took place in December 2012 when the 31-year-old victim, wife of a journalist and small-time film director, was given a lift by Mishra, her immediate boss, till the studio.
After committing the rape, Mishra started threatening her and seeking sexual favours, which she declined. A ‘complaint’ to the show’s management led to Mishra’s sacking, after which he started blackmailing her. Soon, she gathered courage and narrated her ordeal to her husband, who took him to the police. The couple then filed an FIR and had Mishra arrested on charges of rape and criminal intimidation.
