Mumbai: Soon Mumbaikars will be able to travel to Matheran on a ropeway which has been cleared by the Public Works Department. This ropeway has been planned with glass cars and transparent floors to provide the view of the valley and it is expected to be operational in six months.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials said the transport system will be at least 4.7 km long. The ropeway has been designed to carry at least 600 passengers every hour and the tourists can use two types of cable cars at one place. Once the project is operational, Mumbaikars would be able to reach Matheran in less than 20 minutes.
The cable car will ferry the tourists residing in Bhutivali village at Bhivpuri near Neral to Matheran. The total cost of the project is Rs 150 crore. The entire ropeway project has been planned by Matheran Ropeway Private Limited (MRPL). The ropeway would provide an alternate mode of transportation access to Mathern and will help attract tourists to this place.
