There is something kind of revolution and we all should be a part of it. Mumbai is all set to host the first women-only street art festival called ‘Ladies First’ in Marol Art Village, Andheri and it is looking pretty awesome. The week-long festival that begins on March 25 is going to be a power-packed one with art, workshops, talks, performances by hip-hop artists and a lot of other fun activities. There is a lot to take in, and all of them are so good. “The whole point is that art is really coming up and we are no more such people who go to galleries and see art and people who want to reach other people need to be on the street. Street art is something which is really important and now with the whole women issues and other issues which people want to talk about, I think it is a very good place for artist to come and talk about it with the community,” says Avantika Mathur, the artist who has been making graffiti for several years now. She also feels having artwork on the wall gives you a feeling of safety even in a secluded area. The whole-week festival is organised in collaboration with graffiti agency Wicked Broz and Military Road Residents Welfare Association.
The week-long festival will see over 10 artists taking the wall and painting the 1,000 sq feet area that covers everything from multi-storied buildings to running walls to installations. Talking about the ‘women-only’ initiative, Avantika says, “Art is still a male-dominated sector and organising all-women art festival empowers women in a nice way. I believe every woman empowers every other woman. So at the festival, we all are going to come together, have a conversation, do something for the society and I think this is going to be a really good initiative for artists. The artists are not only from Mumbai, but they are also coming from all over the country. We will also have women artists who will exhibit their work.”
Ask the Avantika if the team is following any specific theme, she says, “Each artist have different agenda. For instance, I work for women empowerment and my style is very surreal. I believe in nature, how we are all connected and we should be the best version of ourselves. There is another artist Anpu who has been doing animals and wildlife stuff. So each artist has their own ideology. The theme is open to creativity.” She further appeals to people to help them in the initiative by volunteering for the event. All you have to do is get in touch with them through Instagram or any social media platforms.
Well, this is not the first time Avantika is part of such initiative. She was chosen by Absolut initiative for ‘A Night for Change’ from India to make graffiti overnight. The initiative where artists started and ended their work at the same time all over the world. Her artwork was based on the theme of women empowerment. Also, every International Women’s Day, she along with the help of an NGO chooses a wall in the city and creates an artwork. You can find her artwork in Borivali, Carter Road and a lot of other places.
