Mumbai: Standing Committee members oppose proposed list of 89,000 hawking pitches released by BMC

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Standing Committee members on Wednesday vehemently opposed the proposed list of 89,000 hawking pitches released by the civic administration and already open for public suggestions and objections uptill January 31, 2018. However, the corporators alleged they have been kept in dark and not even been informed about it. Neither they have been involved while preparing the list. Therefore, the list should be withdrawn immediately the demand been made by all in the Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday.

Manoj Kotak the Group Leader of Bharatiya Janta Party(BJP) and also the member of Standing Committee raised point of order on the issue and stated BMC civic officers are taking the public representatives ‘councillors’ for granted. The list doesn’t have any councillors involvement. “There is confusion among the people as the list also have those roads which does not have required footpath length like less than 10 metre, the hawking pitches have been proposed near religious places like near temple, masjid, church, and schools which is itself is against the guidelines of Bombay High Court (HC). Hence, the list should be withdrawn until the list of hawking pitches been tabled in civic corporation and standing committee and gets approval. The suggestions and objections process should be stalled,” added Kotak.

Supporting Kotak, the Leader of Opposition (LOP) Ravi Raja slammed the civic body and said the proposed list of hawking pitches is four years old which has been rejected by the corporation earlier.  “How BMC can release that list of hawking which has been rejected by the corporation members which consist 227 corporators from all over political party. Even, the then additional municipal  commissioner Pallavi Darade made the statement that new list will be prepared as there are loopholes.”

Rais Shaikh another member of Standing Committee and Corporator of Samajwadi Party (SP) stated that the civic officials are busy on social media ‘Twitter’ and not replying to corporators messages, indirectly pointing finger on Deputy Municipal Commissioner (DMC) of Removal and Encroachment Department Nidhi Choudhari and further accused her that just to increase the followers count she is posting pictures of abandoned vehicles been towed by civic officials in different wards, also sharing information about hawking pitches. However, the corporators are unaware of what is happening in the BMC.

As all party corporators slammed the civic corporation on proposed 89,000 hawking pitches, Sena corporators Yashwant Jadhav put forth the demand of adjournment, and the committee been adjourned for the day without further conducting any business.
