Mumbai: Slums on CRZ land won’t get supply of water & power

BHAYANDAR: In a belated but much needed move to save mangroves, the revenue department has finally adopted a zero-tolera nce policy against illegal constructions on Coastal Regulation Zones (CRZ) and government-owned land by imposing a strict prohibition on awarding electricity connections and provision of other civic facilities on wetlands. The revenue wing has dashed off a letter to electric service providers and the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) in this context.

The MBMC in 2012 had written to power supply providers that they insist on making production of civic NOCs at the time of accepting forms to install new electric connections. However, a central government directive mandated power supply companies to install electrical connections to slums sans the NOC.   But alarmed by the destruction of the dense mangrove cover, the revenue department has now imposed a ban on providing facilities to such illegal structures.
