Mumbai: Semi-fast local trains on Central line set for conversion to fast trains from October

Mumbai: Central Railway has proposed to increase the frequency of fast trains by converting semi-fast local trains to benefit long-distance passengers. This plan will be executed from October when the Central Railway rolls out its new timetable.

The decision on the number of semi-fast trains to be converted will be taken after a plan is chalked out by senior officials.

Central railways also plans to introduce at least 40 new additional train services on the central line after the new timetable is rolled out. Officials of this rail line were informed about the introduction of the new services during a review meeting by the Railway Board (Traffic) in May.

“At least 15 new additional services will be added on the main line between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) to Kalyan station. The remaining will be decided once the complete plan is chalked out,” a senior Central Railway official said.

Once the semi-fast services are converted into fast trains, commuters from Dombivali, Kalyan and Ambernath will be benefited as there will be lesser number of halts to CST.

However, many from from stations like Diva, Mumbra and Thakurli will be inconvenienced . “We will not be able to board the fast trains from Diva station like the semi-fast which I usually take to CST as the new trains will halt at only Kalyan or Dombivli stations,” said Surekha Rao, a commuter from Diva station.
