Mumbai: Police nab pimp who used WhatsApp to run sex racket

Bhayandar: Instant messaging applications like WhatsApp and other social networking sites seem to have become the latest platform for sex trade racketeers to conduct and promote their nefarious and immoral activities. This came to light during a raid conducted by the Anti-Human Trafficking Wing of the Thane (rural) police led by newly appointed Dy SP Atul Kulkarni at an apartment in a posh housing society in Mira Road on Tuesday evening.

While a 36-year old female pimp has been arrested and booked under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA) and the Indian Penal Code, three young women who were present in the house for purposes of prostitution were rescued by the police team from the clutches of the racketeers.

The pimp used to communicate with her potential clients through social messaging platforms including WhatsApp application where it was convenient for her to send the photographs of girls she had to offer.

According to the police they had received specific information that women were being made available for prostitution from a posh apartment in the Ramdev Park area of Mira Road. Not ruling the involvement of a big network of pimps involved in the flesh trade API Sanjay Bangar said, “Our team under the instructions of SP Dr Mahesh Patil, established contact and successfully struck a deal with the pimp through a decoy customer.”  After confirmation a team of police officers swooped down on the apartment. While the rescued girls have been sent to a rehabilitation center, the accused pimp has been remanded to custody, police said.
