Mumbai: The Mumbai police have beefed up police security across the city due to the ongoing Diwali festival.
According to Mumbai Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar, “The security has been beefed up in the city due to the festive season. Police will be deployed at shopping malls, crowded market streets and religious places across the city for security purposes.” “The city’s local trains, public procession and malls will be also manned,” he added. “The railway police are conducting anti-sabotage checks and surprise drills at railway stations. We are also checking commuters’ luggage,” said a police officer requesting anonymity.
It may be noted that an alert was issued last week which stated that explosives may be mixed with firecrackers for attacks in Mumbai and Delhi but there was no mention of a specific target or time.
“We are still ascertaining the veracity of the threat. We are co-ordinating with anti-terror cells (ATCs) and the railway police across Mumbai to gather terror-related information,” said the officer.
“We have also been checking lodges and low-end hotels where owners generally don’t ask for a proof,” said Padsalgikar.
