Mumbai: Now, Indrani Mukerjea booked for rioting in Byculla Jail

A day after the death of female prisoner Manjula Govind Shetye (40) who died under mysterious circumstances in Byculla women’s prison, now Nagpada police have initiated a probe against the six jail staff and 250 inmates which includes Indrani Mukerjea.

Indrani Mukerjae who was booked for her daughter’s murder, has now been named in a FIR for alleged rioting after the death of an inmate. According to media reports, there where clashes between authorities and inmates. A rioting case was registered against the inmates after the incident. The Byculla prison in-charge has also said that an investigation is under way to find out if Indrani was leading the protest.

Akhilesh Singh Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3), told The Free Press Journal, “A First Information Report has been registered for murder (Section 302) and common intention (Section 34) against the six errant Byculla jail officials. We have recorded the statements of the jail inmates.”

Death of Manjula Shetye

Manjula Govind Shetye (40), died in died under mysterious circumstances in Byculla women’s prison. Manjula Shetye was convicted by the Bombay High Court in 2003 on charges of murdering her sister-in-law and was first lodged at Yerwada jail. She was shifted to Byculla prison a month back. Shetye allegedly was assaulted inside the prison and was rushed to JJ hospital for treatment but was declared dead before admission.
