Mumbai: After citizens had complained about the Mulund and Airoli toll plaza operators not being in compliance with the government’s notice to charge toll for only one way, the Maharashtra government, on Monday, waived toll for light vehicles from August 21 to September 23 at the Mulund and Airoli toll plazas.

The Mumbra bypass has been closed for repairs since May and all the vehicles, especially heavy trucks, have been forced to take a detour via the Mulund-Airoli road. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) had issued instructions to collect toll only at one of the two ends. However, since operators were collecting double toll, there was a public outcry.

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe and Jitendra Awhad of the Nationalist Congress Party, had raised the issue of double toll and asked the government to waive the toll. In May, Awhad had even stopped operators from collecting toll from citizens. There are regular traffic snarls at the toll plazas, leading to long queues, with people being forced to spend over an hour to get through the nakas on a daily basis. On the Sion-Panvel highway, at the Kalamboli toll plaza, the queues go on for over three kilometres in both directions. People rushing to tackle emergencies at home have been unable to reach on time. The ministers for Public Works Department Chandrakant Patil and Eknath Shinde (Projects) announced the toll-free move at a press conference.
