Mumbai: Missing diamond merchant found dead in Panvel

Mumbai: Nine days after a Ghatkopar-based diamond merchant went missing, his decomposed body was found near the Dehrang Dam. His body was identified by his son Friday. The body of Rajeshwar Udani, 57, was discovered by Panvel police on Tuesday evening.

Pant Nagar police said, Udani, a resident of Mahalaxmi Apartments in Ghatkopar (W), had left the house on November 28 with his driver. However, Udani changed his car on the Eastern Express Highway at Vikhroli and asked his driver to go back home.

Udani’s phone location showed he travelled till Rabale Bridge in Panvel city, after which his phone was switched off. The next day, Udani’s son Ronak approached Pant Nagar police and registered a missing persons complaint. On December 4, Pant Nagar police registered a kidnapping case.

On the same day, Panvel police found a decmposed body near Dehrang Dam in Panvel. “The body was partially eaten by bugs and the face was completely unrecognisable. After the postmortem, we found no external injury marks on the body,” said Ashok Rajput, senior police inspector of Panvel police station.

Later, Udani’s son identified the body. Rajput added, “Ronak identified his father’s body from the clothes, belt and the footwear. After the identification, the body and evidences were handed over to Pant Nagar police.”Meanwhile, police sources said the family suspect the reason to be fallout of his proximity to some women working in dance bars. The police have questioned over 50 persons, including three television actresses and seven women working in bars.
