Mumbai: In a point of order raised by Opposition leader Ravi Raja, all the BMC corporators on Tuesday raised a stink over the ‘Nullah Safai’ the civic body has been undertaking over the years. The corporators also alleged in the meeting that although they have begun de-silting operations, Metro work will add to the problems this monsoon.
“There is 650 km of nullahs in the city and de-silting work on even half of them is not over. Around 3.46 metric tonnes of waste in major nullahs and almost 2 metric tonnes of waste in minor nullahs are yet to be removed,” said Raja. “The administration has to furnish details about what work has been done. Every detail of de-silting and transportation should be given to each corporator. Where does all the silt go? And the corporation claims the city is monsoon ready?” said Raja with obvious sarcasm.
All the parties supported Raja’s point of order and urged the city mayor to take prompt action on the issue. BJP corporator Prabhakar Shinde said the corporation was wasting money and duping citizens by conducting faulty conservancy drives. “If this is the state of the city, then what are we doing to tell the citizens? Each and every year we put crores into cleaning up the drains and this year, too, all the money will go down the drain,” said Shinde.
