Mumbai: Media organisations that constantly highlight gender issues are not transparent about the same as revealed in a research study. Out of 15, only three women who faced sexual harassment at worklodged a complaint. Interestingly, a majority, that is 46 per cent of the 49 women respondents are unaware on the Internal Committee (IC) in their organisation which deals with such complaints.
]This survey conducted across 36 media houses (print, broadcast and advertising) was initiated by students of Gender Issues Cell of KC College and Population First, an NGO. The study also revealed that cultural stereotypes were more pronounced in the regional media. Kalpana Sharma, a senior journalist, said, “Women should overcome the thought of inability of performing certain tasks.” Hemlata Bagla, principal of KC college, said, “The transgender community should also be involved in the media.”
