Mumbai: MBMC’s bus service contract hits corruption roadblock

Bhayandar: After a Delhi-based bus services contractor landed in the custody of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on July 9 for offering a bribe of Rs 25 lakh to the local legislator to secure a safe passage for his company, the fate of the public transport system in Mira Bhayandar continues to hang in balance. The contractor, identified as Radhe Shyam Kathuria, had bagged the contract of running and maintaining the public transport utility of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) on a gross cost contract model.

The bid was won following multiple failed attempts by the MBMC to invoke interest from aspiring bidders. Alleging large-scale manipulations and corruption by the pro-contractor, the BJP had vehemently opposed the move while seeking cancellation of the single tender bid. The Shiv Sena teamed up with the Opposition to pass the proposal.
