Husband-wife, mother-daughter, siblings and kin of powerful politicians — the August 20 polls for the 95-member Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) will be one big family affair in which many candidates flaunt a rich political inheritance. Some candidates pitted against their own relatives while others are entering the political world by holding the hand of a family member who is already a political figure.

While BJP stalwart Narendra Mehta will make a mark again through his sister-in-law Dimple Mehta as the party’s candidate from ward number-12, his Sena counterpart and arch rival-Gilbert Mendonca has fielded his daughter Catleen Periera (8), brother Steven Mendonca and sister Greeta Farro (both 7)  from his stronghold in Bhayandar. Congress strongman Muzaffar Hussain’s mother Noor Jahan Hussain is seeking re-election from ward number-9C. Add to this two pairs of biological brothers, one pair of cousins, two pairs of mother and daughter are also in the fray.

However, topping the list is the Bhoir family which has hit a jackpot with four of its members bagging Sena tickets after defecting from other parties. While Raju Bhoir and his wife Bhavna are contesting from a same  panel in Mira Road’s ward number 16, Raju’s brothers Dilip and Kamlesh are contesting from ward numbers 17 A and 15 D respectively.

Cousins Premnath Patil and Dhanesh Patil are Shiv Sena’s panel partners in ward number 4. Couple Rauf Qureshi and his wife Zeenat are Congress candidates from panel number-8. Interestingly, in some cases relatives are contesting from different parties. Like Varsha Bhanushali who is a BJP contestant from ward number 23, but her daughter Dipali is an independent from her mother’s original ward ( number-5).

Aditya in a road show of strength

Shiv Sena youth leader Aditya Thackeray’s roadshow in the twin-city on Sunday to campaign for party candidates for elections to the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) on Sunday  received an overwhelming response. The crowds that had gathered for Aditya mainly comprised youngsters who blocked roads along the route. At every stop, slogans and the sound of fire-crackers reverberated in the air.

The junior Thackeray exuded confidence that the Sena would emerge as winners in the MBMC elections and wrest the Mayoral post. The Sena is locked in a neck-and-neck fight with its ally BJP to gain control over the 95-member civic body which goes to poll on August 20.
