Mumbai: As the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) is going through a serious financial crisis, Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has criticised Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta for not providing relief to the undertaking body.
On Monday, a joint meeting was called in the Standing Committee hall of the civic corporation to find a solution for BEST. But though this was the fourth meeting conducted together with the BEST General Manager and Civic Commissioner along with party representatives and union members no solution was found.
Mahadeshwar said, “In the upcoming meeting which is to be conducted on July 31, if no help is given by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) then from August 1 onwards BEST employees will call a strike. Then the sole responsibility will be of commissioner Mehta.”
Meanwhile, the Mayor also taunted Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis for neglecting the Mumbai public transport body. He remarked that the CM helped Nagpur Municipal Corporation. In the same manner he should help the BMC as he is CM of Maharashtra and Mumbai is part of the state.
Earlier the Mayor also wrote a letter to the state government to clear Rs 3, 500 crore pending dues from various departments of the BMC. Yashwant Jadhav, civic House leader and Sena corporartor also demanded Rs. 2,000 crore from civic body as immediate help to make the undertaking sustainable.
