Mumbai: Shahu Nagar police have arrested a man for raping his 13-year-old daughter for the last two years, while a search operation for the uncle is underway. The incident came to light when the survivor’s mother saw her husband forcing himself on their daughter. The accused duo has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The accused father, an auto rickshaw driver, had raped his daughter on several occasions in the last two years. Along with the father, the victim’s uncle, who stayed with them, would also rape her. The father of the girl was aware of this. The girl tried to complain about her father and uncle to her mother several times, but could not do so fearing the repercussions as threatened by her father.
The girl’s mother admitted the entire neighbourhood was aware of her husband’s crime. “My daughter confided in our neighbours who had tried to warn me. However when I confronted my husband, he rebuffed all the allegations and threatened me with a divorce if I pursued the matter further.”
The girl’s mother said when her husband persisted with the assault, other residents of the chawl asked the family to vacate and leave their neighbourhood. But the men refused to comply. On November 11, as the girl’s mother walked into the house, she was shocked to see her husband raping their daughter and she began to shout loudly. However, her objection was met with physical abuse by husband and she left the house with her daughter to stay at her brother’s house in Mira Road area.
The girl’s mother narrated the incident to her maternal family and stated the reason for leaving the house. Her family insisted she should approach the police. She registered a complaint against her husband and brother-in-law for raping her daughter on Thursday.Police sub-inspector Ajit Kakade said, “We have arrested the father and are still looking for the uncle, who has absconded as soon as he learnt of his brother’s arrest. The girl was made to undergo medical tests at Sion Hospital and we are awaiting the reports.”
