Mumbai: International Ellora-Ajanta Fest kicks off

Chief Minister launches the Maharashtra Unlimited ‘Marathwada’ edition and unveils tourism directorate in Aurangabad

Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the three-day International Ellora-Ajanta festival organised by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in association with Divisional Commissioner Aurangabad at the Ellora Caves.

Fadnavis also announced that the State government has decided to start a tourism directorate in Aurangabad to make the city of heritage and monuments that have the capacity to attract tourists in large numbers, known to the world.

During this festival, the Maharashtra Unlimited Magazine’s ‘Marathwada’ edition was also launched at the hands of the Chief Minister in the presence of Jaykumar Rawal, Minister of Tourism, Smt. Valsa Nair Singh, Principal Secretary, Tourism & Cultural, Government of Maharashtra, and Dr. K.H. Govinda Raj, MD of MTDC.

Addressing the programme, Tourism Minister Jaykumar Rawal said, “The Ajanta-Ellora Caves have remained the biggest tourism attraction in the state among foreigners and Indians. The historical silk route and connect of the place with the Buddhist circuit across world, including China and Japan, is significant. Looking at the scope of tourism in the city, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared tourism directorate in Aurangabad. In 2018, we will be celebrating completion of 200 years of the discovery of the world heritage Ajanta Caves by British officer John Smith.”

The festival started with an inaugural concert presented by Parwati Dutta by offering dance to the sublime sculptures, divine legends and magnificent architecture of Ellora. The remaining two-day programme of the festival was held at Soneri Mahal, a 17th century Haveli built by Pahad Singh, on the premises of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. Music and film personalities, including Ajay-Atul, Shreya Ghoshal, Kunal Ganjawalla, Sonali Kulkarni to name a few enthralled the audience at Soneri Mahal.
