Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Monday asked the Maharashtra government to file a report on dowry-related complaints received by its grievances redressal forum, set up recently. A bench of Justices SS Kemkar and MS Karnik asked the Maharashtra government to file the report within a month while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) which alleged that some matrimonial websites allowed the prospective grooms to demand dowry through their profiles.
Priscila Samuel, the petitioner, claimed that though the Dowry Prohibition Act came into force in 1961, Maharashtra had done “very little” to curb the social evil.
The High Court had, in June, asked the government to set up a grievances redressal forum to deal with complaints of dowry demands.
