Bhayandar: Less than 36 hours after he setting ablaze the flat of a Congress corporator in Mira Road by pouring petrol on the main entrance door, Aasif Anwar Khan (32) was arrested by the Naya Nagar police from Uttan road in Bhayandar on Sunday evening. However, his accomplice Uneb Kewal is still absconding. Baffled by the intense campaign launched by the local Congress unit to spread awareness on the hazards of drug and alcohol consumption, the duo resorted to the brazen act of violence by trying to set ablaze senior Congress corporator Jubeir Inamdaar’s first floor flat in Mira Smruti building in Naya Nagar, at around 3:20 am on Saturday.

However, thanks to the presence of mind shown by the daughters of Inamdaar, the fire was quelled on time averting a major tragedy. Aged 25 and 23 years, both were alone in the flat as their parents had gone to their native village in Chiplun (Ratnagiri) to attend the funeral of a close relative. At around 3:30 am the girls woke up to crackling sounds and smelt smoke. The entire sequence of events, which has been captured in the buildings CCTV camera, clearly shows Aasif bolting the main door and sprinkling petrol on it before setting it on fire and rushing out of the building.

Uneb had apparently kept a watch from his car parked outside the building. Apart from a case of attempt to murder, sections related to mischief by fire with intent to destroy house and for causing death or hurt has been slapped against the duo. “Based on the image captured by the CCTV cameras and tip-offs from our informants, we had ascertained the identities of the culprits who are notorious for criminal activities. While Aasif has been arrested, Uneb will be also behind the bars soon.” said Senior Police Inspector-Balaji Pandhare.
