Mumbai: A massive iron girder of an under-construction flyover crashed down at Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road on Saturday when a container truck rammed into the flyover girder. The girder of the under construction flyover joining Ghatkopar and Mankhurd, crashed down on two vehicles, a four wheeler (Maruti Celerio) and a police marshall bike. Deonar police have arrested the container driver and booked him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. No casualties were reported in the incident.
According to sources, the incident took place on Saturday evening at 4.10 pm, near the Lotus Junction of Shivaji Nagar when the container truck rammed into the iron-cast pillar of the flyover. As a result, the iron girder collapsed on the two vehicles parked under it, as the road was jam packed due to the flyover construction. The collapse added to the already disrupted traffic on Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported in the incident.
The container driver, who was travelling towards Chheda Nagar from Mankhurd, was speeding on the road, following which he lost control and collided with the iron cast pillar. Shahaji Umap, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 6) said, “We have arrested the accused and booked him for rash driving and causing destruction to public property. He will be produced in court on Sunday.”
As traffic snarls hit the busy road on Saturday evening, it took the traffic officials more than an hour to clear the traffic even as efforts to move the collapsed iron girder from the vehicles were underway.
