Mumbai: Mumbai police have detained one 17-year-old Pune boy in connection with the murder of former Shiv Sena Corporator Ashok Sawant who was stabbed multiple times by the three miscreants outside his house in Kandivali (east) on late Sunday night. The juvenile was present at the spot when Sawant was being stabbed, said the source.
A police officer said, “The juvenile has been brought from Pune. We are questioning him at present.” The prime accused Jagdish Pawar alias Jagga and his two accomplices are still on the run. The Mumbai police have formed several teams who have been sent to different parts of Maharashtra to track them.
Jagga and the third accused often used to visit the house of latter’s sister, who lives in Pune. The duo lured the juvenile for a bright future and convinced him to come to Mumbai. “We are probing his (juvenile’s) role in the crime,” said the officer. The police have yet ‘not established the reason’ behind the brutal killing of Sawant. The investigators are checking if there are any failed attempt to kill Sawant in the past too.
A senior officer from Mumbai crime branch told the Free Press Journal that Jagga used to be close confidant of Sawant decades ago when the latter’s career was at its peak. The investigators believe that personal rivalry between the duo could have led to Sawant’s killing.
“Jagga was Sawant’s right hand when he was a sitting corporator. People used to contact Jagga to approach Sawant. But there was on and off dispute between the duo since 2010. You know the weak points of a person if you are working with him. Jagga, who is a history sheeter, might have been scared of being exposed. We will come to know the reason only after arresting Jagga,” said the officer.
Till now only two accused – autorickshaw driver Ganesh Jogdand (33) and Sohail Dodhia (30) – have been arrested by the Samata Nagar police. During interrogation the autorickshaw driver told investigators that he was not aware of the intension of three occupants, including Jagga when they hired his rikshaw. “The prime accused and his accomplices boarded the autorickshaw and its driver Jogdand followed Sawant from 7 pm to 10:45 pm on Sunday,” a senior officer told the Free Press Journal.
“Jogdand claims to have not known the intention of Jagga and his accomplices. He told us that Dodhia asked him to ferry Jagga and his accomplices to tail Sawant for recovery of money. But after Sawant was attacked, he got scared and ran away. In 2011, Jogdand was booked under for assault by dangerous weapons (324) by Mumbai police,” said the officer.
The Call Data Records (CDR) revealed that Jogdand and Dodhia were in touch with each other for the last one month. Meanwhile, Jogdand and Dodhia were produced before Borivali court that has sent them to police custody till January 18. Sawant was killed by three men including Jagga at 10:45pm on Sunday when he was coming back to home on two wheeler with his friend Vinod Sonawane.
