Goods belonging to service providers of Flipkart, Amazon seized for flouting norms

Mumbai: Packaged commodities worth over Rs 37 lakh and Rs 47 lakh were seized from service providers of e-commerce giants Flipkart and Amazon respectively for not having proper declarations on their goods.

“The name and address of the manufacture, packer or importer or in some cases the MRP itself was not mentioned,” said Amitabh Gupta, controller, Legal Metrology Organisation of the state. “We went to the godowns of these companies in Bhiwandi,” added Gupta.

The special inspection was carried out by a team of eight on October 19 and 24 after receiving complaints from consumers regarding the same.

A press note from the organisation said that some products did not mention the customer-care number or email address, month and year of manufacturing, packing or importing or name of the commodity.

“The online trade is difficult to monitor. Keeping a check on trade happening is stores around us is easier. But in these goods go directly from the godown to the consumer. They are not in the open for us to keep a check,” he said.

Among the 18 types of commodities seized from Instacart, a service provider for Flipkart, are crockery sets, jewel sets, bedsheets and spanner sets. Mixer grinder, toys, cooker, speaker, laptop table and dinner set were among the 21 types of commodities seized from Amazon Sellers Suppliers Pvt. Ltd. The press note said that Amazon officials said the premise is owned by the company.
