Mumbai: A domestic help was arrested for conducting robbery of jewellery and cash worth Rs.58 lakhs at the residence of a senior citizen at Nepean Sea road. The incident had taken place in September 2015 at the residence of Laju Godhwani (70).
Radheshyam Mandal (27) worked at the residence of Godhwani. He was on the run since September 14, 2015. Mandal was arrested from Surat in Gujarat on Tuesday. During interrogation, the police learnt that he had fled to Nepal immediately after the robbery.
According to the First Information Report registered by Godhwani, “Mandal used to work as a domestic help at my residence for several years. He stopped coming to work from the next day after the heist whuch raised further suspicion. Rs. 4 lakh cash and ornaments worth Rs 54.25 lakh were stolen from my residence. The robbery took place when nobody was present at home on September 14, 2015. The gold jewellery was looted from inside the locker.”
According to Dnyaneshwar Chavan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-2), “We have recovered all the stolen ornaments from a farm at his native place in Durgipatti village in Khutauna district of Bihar. The motive of the crime was purely the greed for money. A team had been dispatched to his village in Bihar. We figured out that he had deposited Rs 2 lakhs from the booty in his brother Jayram’s bank account. When we reached his native place, during interrogation we came to know that Radheshyam was working with one of his relatives at Surat from where he was finally arrested.”
“Radheshyam confessed to his crime and showed us the spot where the valuables were hidden at his farm in Bihar. He had also planted a sapling there to mark the spot,” added Chavan.
