Mumbai Crime: Domestic servant held for poisoning prominent Colaba businesswoman

On Sunday, Colaba police arrested a 33-year-old domestic servant for allegedly poisoning a prominent Colaba businesswoman.

According to Mumbai Mirror, the accused has been identified as Riyal Mandal (33) and the victim has been identified as Zinnia Khajotia (65). Zinnia Khajotia is a prominent businesswoman and activist whose son, daughter usually stayed abroad on work. They hired a Riyal Mandal, a resident of the nearby Ganesh Murti Nagar, as a house help. But since August, she had been regularly feeling drowsy and nauseous after eating. When her son and daughter returned to India, she told them about it, and they took her to their family doctor.

Later, after some tests were done, the doctor suspected that Zinnia Khajotia was given food which contained rat poison. As Riyal Mandal was the only person who cooked for Zinnia, the family suspected him of lacing food with poison. The family later approached Colaba police and filed a case under section 328 of IPC (causing hurt by means of poison). Colaba police told the leading daily, “We have arrested the servant and have got his police custody. We are inquiring into why he used to administer the poison.”

Who is Zinnia Khajotia?

Zinnia Khajotia stays in Bakhtawar building near Colaba post office. She is a director in several companies. She is the trustee of the Olga Craen and Jules Craen Foundation, set up in 2012 to honour Olga and Jules Craen, who worked to educate the general public about Western classical music. She is also a director in several companies.
