Mumbai: The Economic Survey for the year 2016-17 appreciated the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for being the most efficient and transparent Municipal administration in the country – praise that threatens to derail the campaign of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for the forthcoming civic polls.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had launched an attack against Sena’s style of functioning in the BMC accusing it of not having a ‘transparent administration.’ This prodded an upset Sena to break its tottering 25-year-old alliance with the BJP.
Within a few hours of the Economic Survey announcement, Trushna Vishwasrao, leader of the Sena in the BMC, seized the opportunity to propose a congratulatory resolution in the standing committee to support Arun Jaitely for applauding the BMC for its administration.
Vishwasrao further demanded that Ajoy Mehta, the Commissioner of BMC, should put up posters all over the city stating Jaitely’s appreciation of the civic body. She added, “Let the common man of the city know the truth. People need to know how the civic body works and our motto is to run it efficiently.”
This appreciation from Jaitley has left the state BJP in a quandary as the party has been deriding the Sena and running campaigns that the party’s rule is full of scams.
Member of Parliament (MP) Kirit Somaiya in particular has been vocal against the Sena accusing them of being ‘mafia raj’ party. On the back foot after the Survey, he said, “Jaitley has applauded BMC for tax and revenue collection for the year 2016- 17, it was not regarding the scams which happened in the corporation.”
