Bhayandar: It was a narrow escape for 37-year-old Sonal Deepak Shah, a housewife residing in the ground floor apartment of Shripal building in Bhayandar. After seeing off her son to school, Sonal had stepped out to visit a nearby temple on Thursday, minutes later, at around 10 am, a huge chunk of her living room ceiling came crashing down.
According to fire brigade personnel, a portion of the first floor slab came crashing down on Sonal’s apartment on the ground floor. Since the flooring of the first floor apartment was under repair, the occupants including – Bhairavi Goradia (38), her son Kanha (9) and 65-year-old mother-in-law – were in another room and they too had a lucky escape.
“After getting a call, our fire brigade personnel immediately reached the spot and rescued the trio who were trapped in their apartment,” said fire officer Prakash Borade.
Interestingly, the building isn’t mentioned in the list of dangerous structures declared by the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). An structural audit of the 35-year-old building has been ordered by the civic body. The incident again puts the spotlight on the issue of dilapidated and rickety structures in the region which are crying for structural repairs.
