Mumbai: BMC to book errant road contractors, recover losses from them

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to stop payment of errant contractors and also recover the money which have already been paid to them. The contractors have cheated the civic body to the tune of Rs 600-800 crore by cutting the corners in construction of over 240 roads, said a BMC probe.

Over the year Snehal Ambekar also spoke about road scams. Recently, the roads test was made on 5 roads in Mumbai, further inquiry ordered was asked to cover 217 roads. Approximately, Rs 800 crore figure was arrived as the quantum of loss. The BMC took into account the scope of work, reduction in its life because of shoddy work.

According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the municipal corporation has now decided to not only stop payments to the guilty contractors, but also recover the money already paid to them. While six of the sixteen contractors already have FIRs registered against them, police cases against the rest will be registered once the probe report is formally submitted to Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta.

In the month of June, Mumbai police arrested four site engineers in the connection with Rs 352 crore road scam. Sanjay Dinanath Singh, Sunil Bapusaheb Chavan, Sandip Ashok Jadhav and Santhanavel Velmani, 14 accused have been booked till date.
