Mumbai: BJP MP Poonam Mahajan wants Bandra Terminus renamed after late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray

The saga of renaming railway stations goes on. With an eye on the upcoming 2019 elections, BJP MP Poonam Mahajan has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and union Home Minister Rajnath Singh seeking permission to rename Bandra Terminus after late Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackeray.

BJP MP Poonam Mahajan told Mumbai Mirror, “This will be a fitting tribute to Balasaheb since he lived in Bandra for a large part of his life. Like I have said in the letter, he was Bandra’s most eminent resident.” The BJP MP has claimed that there was no political interest behind the proposal. Bandra Terminus comes under Poonam Mahajan’s Mumbai North Central constituency, which also has a stronghold of Shiv Sena.

Bandra Terminus is a congested railway station in Bandra where trains bound for northern and western India are scheduled regularly. It was built in the 1990s to decongest the main Mumbai Central station. Questions will obviously arise as to if this is an attempt of BJP to mend its ties with the Shiv Sena or just a mere trick to garner more votes during the upcoming elections.
