Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) budget was tabled in the Standing Committee meeting on Thursday which will be sent for review in its next general body meeting, in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). In order to pull out the BEST from loses, Standing Committee chairman Yashwant Jadhav in his speech advised the BEST to generate income by producing power from wind, solar power and power from waste.
The BEST is in a deficit of Rs 720 crore which is yet to be approved and before that the standing committee members have sent the tabled budget for review, which they want to be raised in the forthcoming general body meeting. Speaking on this debate, Yashwant Jadhav suggested, “Concrete solutions should be made to deal with the competition we are facing from Tata and Adani power companies, for which, we have maximised efforts to increase income, provide mobile vans for payment of electricity bills, prevent power thefts and recover outstanding bills”.
Jadhav further urged BMC to make plots available for BEST to generate power of its own. Currently, BEST is only a distributor for the island city and does not generate power. In order to pull BEST out of its losses, Jadhav urged the members of the civic body to give alternatives of power supply for BEST. “We should make efforts to help BEST generate power which can then be supplied to run Metro and Monorail services. Efforts need to be made provide financial aid by the state government and municipal corporation to pull out BEST from huge losses,” Jadhav said.
Jadhav also said to keep BEST bus patrons while some new measures should be taken to provide more facilities to passengers. Members alerted the civic body to remove encroachments on the bus stops, recovery of the bus services given to the police should be compensated by the government and the state should compesate the BEST for the losses it is making due to the forced changing of routes due to the Metro and mono rail works. After the proposed coastal road is constructed, a separate route should be reserved for only for bus services, suggested by Yashwant Jadhav.
