Mumbai: BEST to soon roll out mobile application to display arrival time on bus stops

Good news for commuters of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses. The loss-making transport service is soon going to roll out a mobile application through which one can see the time of arrival of the buses from March 2019. The BEST will also display the arrival time on bus stops as well.

According to Hindustan Times, this comes after BEST approved to install Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) in its buses, in March 2018. The BEST will install Global Positioning System (GPS) chips in its buses which will track the exact location of the buses through which it will show the arrival time. The BEST has planned to install GPS chips in 400 buses and plans to display information at 200 bus stops. The cost of this ambitious project is Rs 112 crore.

Through this, the commuters will also be able to access information regarding buses which are scheduled to arrive in the next 10 to 15 minutes, this information will also be displayed on the bus stops. The BEST management will also be able to keep a track of the bus movements, bus schedule, drivers and conductors operating the buses. For this system, the BEST will also require to set up Wi-Fi, CCTV cameras in the buses. This ITMS project will be managed by a private contractor for a period of five years. The project will be funded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
