Mumbai: After constant public grievances and appeals, the Picnic Point Garden in Aarey Milk Colony will get a facelift and repair works. Park goers and residents nearby have also complained of stealing power cable. Authorities have readied a list to carry out improvements and repairs in the park.
A BMC official said landscaping and beautification of the park has already begun in one section of the garden. “After the monsoon, the broken tiles and other damaged equipments will also be repaired. Along with that, a statue of leopard will also be unveiled soon to the public,” the official stated.
Incidentally, the park was one of the 10 spots the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had submitted to the Supreme Court where construction debris could be dumped. However, the SC upheld the order after the Non Government Organisation Vanashakti filed a petition questioning grounds on which the plots were chosen.
The residents said the jogging track is uneven and one could get hurt while walking or running. Besides that, equipments in the play area are also out of shape and may give away soon. “The authorities should either pull it down or repair it properly. This could also be a disaster waiting to happen and it should be averted as quickly as possible,” said Amiya Kunte, an Aarey Colony resident who brings her seven-year-old son to play in the garden.
The park is spread over more than two acres. Residents and environmentalists feel the authorities are not keen on maintenance of it.
“There are many dustbins installed to be honest, but still there is lot of littering. There is a lack of cleanliness in the park. In the mornings, we even find alcohols from previous night’s parties,” said Prashant Bhoir, another Aarey Colony resident and a regular at the garden.
