On Wednesday, a 36-year-old doctor from Vikhroli was arrested or allegedly posting casteist comments on social media. According to the Hindustan Times, the accused was identified as Dr Sunilkumar Nishad. The Parksite Police in Vikhroli had registered an FIR against Nishad on Saturday based on a complaint by Ravindra Tiwari, also a Vikhroli resident, who said he was a social activist. The police had been on the lookout for Nishad for the past two days and arrested him from South Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon.
The complaint states that one of Tiwari’s friends brought to his notice certain objectionable comments posted by Nishad on a social media platform on May 5. Tiwari then kept track of Nishad’s posts and two days later, he again noticed certain posts that were insulting towards a caste, a God and a freedom fighter, reads the FIR. Vilas Jadhav, senior police inspector, Parksite police station told the Hindustan Times, “Nishad was arrested from the Fort campus of University of Mumbai and will be produced before a local court on Thursday.” Cops have booked Nishad under section 295 (a) (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
