Mumbai: Vile Parle police has arrested three men for assaulting an Air Traffic Control (ATC) official on Sunday night, after he stopped them from drinking at New Airport Colony. The ATC official, Akshat Mahilwal, 30, and the colony’s security guard, were later treated in Nanavati Hospital.
According to police, a few residents of the Bamanwada slums were celebrating a friend’s birthday in New Airport Colony on Sunday night. The group was consuming liquor and creating a nuisance. Mahilwal, who was passingby, approached and asked them to leave. As soon as the security guard of colony saw Mahiwal intervening, he joined him. Refusing to budge, the group indulged in a duel, which turned into a scuffle, in which Mahilwal and the guard were thrashed badly, police said.
Other residents reached the spot and alerted the police. Meanwhile, the group escaped the premises to evade arrest. “Mahilwal and the security guard were rushed to Nanavati Hospital, where they learnt to have sustained hairline fractures and minor injuries,” said Jaimin Khanna, a local.
Police filed a case and scanned the CCTV footage to identify the accused. “Three persons were arrested and a search is on to nab the absconders. The arrested have been booked under Sec 323, IPC. Probe is on,” said investigating officer, Dnyaneshwar Ganore.On Sunday night, ATCs gathered at the Sahar Road office, wearing black bands to protest the attack on Mahilwal and demanded better security and police patrolling.
