Mumbai: 26-year-old mentally-ill youth killed for ‘harassing’ woman at a party

Mumbai: Charkop police have arrested five members of a family for brutally assaulting a 26-year-old mentally-challenged youth who later succumbed to the injuries in hospital. The incident took place during a birthday party in Bhagrekar Nagar of Charkop in Kandivali (West) on Wednesday night.

The murdered youth, Sanjay Tivre, resident of Charkop village, often visited the house of the main accused, Sunil Mohite. Locals said that Sanjay was mentally challenged since childhood and Sunil and his family members were aware of this.

Police said on the night of the incident, Sanjay had asked Sunil’s daughter, Tejaswini (20), for a glass of water. Tejaswini immediately complained to her family that Sanjay made lewd gestures. This apparently enraged the Mohite family, whose members brutally beat up Sanjay with a stick. Cops said those involved in the assault included Tejaswini’s father Sunil Mohite, brothers Vishal Mohite (24) and Ajit Mohite (19) and cousin Vijay Gaikwad (40).

It was the main accused Sunil who informed the police of the incident at his home. Sanjay had gone to the party alone. Interestingly, the Charkop police filed a case under non-cognisable offence section despite the fact that Sanjay was grievously hurt. The cops later rushed the boy to a nearby hospital.

“Such was Sanjay’s condition that the doctors referred the case to Shatabdi Hospital with better treatment facilities. Unfortunately, Sanjay was dead by the time he could be shifted,” said an officer from Charkop police station.

“When we went to the incident spot, we had filed a case under a non-cognisable offence. However, after Sanjay’s death, this was converted into an FIR and the charge of murder has been added to it,” the officer said.
