Mumbai: The MIDC police have arrested the site supervisor and his assistant who were carrying out repair work at the ESIC Hospital at Andheri (E), which claimed nine lives on Monday.They have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC pertaining to causing death due to negligence and endangering the life and safety of others.
According to police so-urces, site supervisor Nilesh Mehta and his assistant Nilesh Kamble were arrested on Tuesday evening. They are employees of Su-preme Constructions, which had taken up renovation work at the hospital. While welding work was on in the hospital storeroom, sparks from the machine had ignited foam mattresses stacked on the premises and caused the fire. The accused had taken up the work without putting in place any fire safety protocols.
Navinchandra Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 10), said: “Two labourers were working in the storeroom when the sparks came in contact with combustible material and later spread through the AC duct. We have booked Mehta and Kamble for negligence and further investigation is on.”
