Mumbai: 19-year-old college student dies while participating in tug-of-war event on sports day

19-year-old college student, Jibin Sunny, studying in KJ Somaiya College, Vidyavihar, died while participating in a tug-of-war event on sports day on Friday morning. He was rushed to civic-run Rajawadi Hospital where he was declared dead before arrival.

Tilak Nagar Police have registered an Accidental Death Report in the matter. Close to 40 students were taking part in the event and Sunny was leading his side. While both sides were pulling the rope, Sunny suddenly had an epileptic fit and collapsed. Before he could be rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead. An official KJ Somaiya College statement said, “It is a very unfortunate incident. Our heartfelt condolences to the family, his teachers and his friends. We stand with them at this difficult time. Our prayers for giving all strength in this time.”

According to the student’s family, he had no medical history of illness.” The post-mortem report is awaited. Sunny was a resident of Wagle Estate in Thane and is suspected to have participated in the game on an empty stomach.  Rajawadi Hospital Doctors said he might have collapsed due to dehydration or a heat stroke. However, only the post-mortem report is likely to shed light on the matter.
