Directive said toll could be charged only at one of the nakas
Mumbai : Since the Mumbra bypass is currently closed for repair work, in order to ease traffic snarls, the state government had issued a directive which stipulated officials could charge toll either at the Mulund or the Airoli toll naka. However, at both the nakas, operators have been violating the order issued by the Maharashtra State Roads Development Corporation (MSRDC).
People are being charged at both nakas, paying double the toll. Most of the traffic from Mumbra bypass is being diverted to Mulund and Airoli — predominantly heavy vehicles — adding to traffic woes.
The order states people can pay toll at Mulund naka and show the receipt at Airoli toll naka or vice versa. However, even a month after issuing this order, operators at both the toll nakas have been violating it. Complaints were made to Shiv Sena leaders and online. The guardian minister for Thane, Eknath Shinde, finally demanded an inquiry into this violation and questioned how much money toll plazas were making at the cost of citizens.
Fearing a backlash, the toll operators assured Shinde they would implement the MSRDC order. However, these are false assurances, claim Sainiks, as the toll nakas continue to fleece drivers, charging them twice as much toll. The order also entails banners to be displayed prominently across all lanes in toll nakas informing people of toll-free coupons, which operators have failed to comply with. These banners are being displayed only across one or two lanes.
