Mumbai : Despite the several ‘chronic’ ailments cited by senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal for seeking bail, the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court on Friday rejected his bail application.

The former deputy chief minister was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection to a Rs 800 crore money laundering case and has been in custody for more than 60 days.

Earlier this week, the counsel who appeard for Bhujbal had informed the special court that the 68-year-old seasoned politician suffers from several ailments like Chronic Bronchial Asthma, Sleep Apnea, Hypertension, severe Diabetes, Episodic Cardiac Failure, Enlarged Prostate, Osteoarthritis etc. He also informed the court that Bhujbal has in past underwent some surgeries like arm-replacement and also that he is undergoing coronary angiography due to blockage in heart.

However, Poornima Kantharia the counsel who appeared for ED had objected to the bail plea and argued that the leader was very much active in his day-to-day activities.

She had told the court that the agency is taking proper care of the accused (Bhujbal) and is providing all the necessary medical help.

She had also assured the court that the agency would provide medical help to Bhujbal whenever needed and that a panel of doctors from government hospitals would treat him. After hearing both the sides, the special Judge PR Bhavake rejected the bail plea.
