Milk protest turned violent as tankers vandalised in Maharashtra

Mumbai: The ‘milk’ protest of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana veered out of control on the first day itself with activists disrupting supply to all major cities across the state, including Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur. It is understood that activists vandalised milk tankers at numerous places and sent them back from other venues. They also emptied the tankers and performed ‘milk abhishek.’ All this in solidarity with farmers who supply milk and are demanding better remunerative prices. A milk tanker was also set afire at Malegaon in Washim district.

In Walva taluka in Sangli district, SSS workers distributed milk to school-going children residing in shanties. In Khataw of Satara district, milk was distributed to Warkaris (pilgrims headed towards Pandharpur). In Shirgaon, too, milk was distributed in schools. Amul Dairy has stopped milk collection from Vasai-Virar.
