Mumbai: After spending Rs two crore on medical books and periodicals, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai will soon spend over Rs 74,000 for the artwork on coffee table books on Dr B R Ambedkar that will be released in the first week of December 2016.

The proposal for the same will be tabled in the civic body’s standing committee on Wednesday.

The Shiv Sena-BJP ruled civic body will release coffee table books on Ambedkar on his death anniversary on December 6. However, the civic body now has declared that 50,000 copies will be printed which will be released on this day.

The civic body is looking forward to release this book during Dr Ambedkar’s 60th death anniversary when lakhs of his followers congregate at Dadar’s Chaityabhoomi every year on December 6.

The move was directed by Mayor Snehal Ambekar after which the civic body had also asked the citizens to provide Dr Ambedkar’s rare photographs and signed letter in order to add it in the book.

However, the civic body is spending Rs 74,000 only for the artwork on the books which has raised a lot of eyebrows. The contract for the artwork is given to a Mumbai-based advertising agency.

Earlier, the civic body was also questioned by the 26- member standing committee for overspending on magazines, journals and periodicals, with the cost of books ranging between Rs two lakh and Rs eight lakh and of the journals costing Rs 17 lakh.

Sandeep Deshpande, MNS leader in the MCGM, alleged that the supplier of the medical books was ready to give a 50 per cent discount on a mere phone call and was urging to arrange a meeting for further negotiations.
